I wasn't expecting much for my birthday given Randal is out of town. I was fine with it. But in reality, I had a fabulous birthday.
Yesterday morning I reminded the kids it was my birthday, mainly so they wouldn't sass me and forgive me when I sneaked away to take a nap. Ethan was sure I couldn't have a birthday without decorations. He proceeded to make dozens of paper hearts and tape them around the house. Here's a few: (Notice the inch of dust. Just keepin' it real!)
Late afternoon I received a call from my best friend of 15+ years. She was expecting her 4th child, due in February. She called to let me know she was in labor. A baby on my birthday! What better gift can there be? I tried to convince her she had to name her baby girl after me, but they seemed to think having a birthday in common didn't trump being named after Grandma. Anyway, Chloe Emma was born yesterday. Congratulations Stacy and Robert!
Our friends the Dukes had invited us over for dinner. The Wilcoxes were there too. We had wonderful dinner with a surprise birthday cake. On top of the traditional birthday song, I even got another birthday song sung solo by John. Much better than my dad's mournful song: "Happy Birthday. Oh, Happy Birthday. There's no sun in the sky, people dying everywhere but, Happy Birthday..." (Actually, I love that dreadful song, it's tradition.)
If that wasn't enough, this morning my new friends from the ward held a birthday brunch. I have been spoiled!
I missed Randal, it's true. But I am overwhelmed by the number of great friends I now have in my life, both near and far. Each one of you truly are an answer to my prayers. I love you.
